As the horrors of zionist genocide continue, this Yiddish saying has been a beacon for my grief and resistance. The words come from the Hassidic Kotzker Rebbe (1787-1859). The image was created in April 2024 for the anti-zionist Pillar of Fire haggadah. It accompanies the yachatz ritual of the seder, when we break the middle matzah, symbolizing the brokenness and wholeness of our lives. As we break open the matzah, may we vow to never abandon our broken hearts and never stop fighting for a Free Palestine.

This saying anchors me alongside these words by Lama Rod Owens: “I have had to learn to invite my broken heart to dine with me at the table. It is meaningless to run now. My broken heart is not a judgment or a crime. It is a detailed record of how I have tried to meet the violence of the world with as much openness as possible.”

And as Rafael Shimunov has said: “As Jews our hearts will never heal from cooption of our faith, history and beloved ancestors to service apartheid and ethnic cleansing. But one doesn’t need a whole heart to fight those who abandoned their hearts long ago.”

A sheynem dank/ thank you to Jay Saper for Yiddish translation support.
